Free Shade Trees

San Tan Valley residents, great news! SRP's popular Shade Tree program is back this summer, offering you a chance to receive up to two free shade trees to help cool your home and reduce energy costs. Registration is now open for three virtual workshops taking place in July and August.

Last spring, SRP distributed over 5,000 free trees to customers, and this year, you have the opportunity to be part of this fantastic program. By attending one of the online workshops, you will learn how to plant and care for the trees, ensuring they thrive and provide the maximum benefit to your home and the local ecosystem.

Workshop Schedule
  • Saturday, July 13, 10-11:15 a.m.
  • Thursday, August 1, 12-1:15 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 24, 10-11:15 a.m.

After completing a workshop, you can select up to two tree saplings, ranging from 2-6 feet tall. This year's available varieties include Palo Verde, Native Mesquite, Thornless Mesquite, Willow Acacia, Desert Willow, and Lilac Chaste.

Lori Gonzales, SRP Senior Product Manager, emphasizes the program's benefits: "SRP is proud to offer its customers another great way to save on their energy bills while also increasing tree cover and helping local ecosystems. In coordination with our partners at Trees Matter, SRP hands out thousands of free trees through the Shade Tree Program every year."

Since its launch in 2012, the Shade Tree program has distributed over 62,000 trees, contributing to cooler homes and healthier local environments.

Eligibility Requirements
To participate in the program, you must:
  • Be a current residential SRP electric customer.
  • Attend one of the workshops.
  • Have the legal right to plant trees on your property (renters must get verbal permission from their landlord).
  • Plant trees on the south, west, or east sides of your home.
  • Plant trees approximately 15-20 feet from exposed exterior walls and windows.
  • Be able to care for the tree as needed.
  • Not have previously received trees for your property from the SRP Shade Tree Program.

Important Reminder
Before planting any trees, remember to call Arizona 811 to locate existing underground lines. This free service will notify local utilities, which will send technicians to mark the approximate locations of underground lines, ensuring safe planting.
